Holistic Dentistry Explained
You’ve probably heard the term holistic doctor or holistic health practitioner, but did you know that there is also a holistic approach to dentistry? As a holistic dentist, Dr. Joel D. Singer, DMD puts the importance of dental health in the context of the patient’s overall health and well-being. The goal is to ensure that your dental treatments are conducted with tools and procedures that enhance total wellness.
Also called biologic or alternative dentistry, there are several ways in which we practice holistic dentistry to ensure the safety and well-being of our patients:
- We practice mercury-free dentistry, which means that we do not use mercury in dental fillings and we also safely remove and dispose of mercury fillings. Mercury has been long known as a toxic metal that can harm our bodies as well as the environment. We have been mercury-free for the past 20 years and are SMART (Safe Mercury Amalgam Removal Technique) certified.
- To keep our patients safe during dental procedures we also utilize ozone therapy. Ozone is a safe and natural occurring gas that helps reduce the presence of oral bacteria. We use it to help disinfect decayed areas of the tooth, such as during root canals, and in treating gum disease.
- Our practice uses digital X-rays to take images of your teeth and mouth, a much safer method than traditional X-rays. Not only do they use 90% less radiation than traditional methods, they also deliver faster high-quality images, allowing us to diagnose and treat our patients more efficiently.
Dr. Joel Singer has remained on the cutting edge of holistic dentistry ever since he began utilizing these techniques 20 years ago as one of the first practices in the area to provide them. As part of his commitment to this safer approach to dentistry, he is a long-time accredited member of the International Academy of Oral Medicine and Technology. The IAOMT is a non-profit network dedicated to the research of biocompatible dental products and procedures.
