How Does Oral Sedation Work?

Sedation dentistry allows us the ability to do years of dental treatments in one or two visits. We can repair broken teeth, restore sore gums to good health, place fillings, prepare crowns, perform root canals and cosmetic rejuvenation. Not only does the highly anxious patient benefit from oral sedation but people with very busy schedules can receive the dental care they need and want with comfort and safety.

There are choices of sedation medication that can be used. Ninety-eight percent of our patients are prescribed Triazolam. This medication has been used for many years and has now found a home in dentistry. The historical safety alone gives us great confidence in using Triazolam. However, the choice of sedation medication is customized based on your individual medical history and your physicians consent. At your first visit a base line reading of your blood pressure is recorded. The most common side effects of this sedation aid are dry mouth and hiccups. The hiccups usually last only a few moments during your sedation and the dry mouth wears off with the medication.

An hour before your appointment you will take one pill; this will help you be relaxed by the time you arrive at our office. We will play soft music, have you covered with a warm blanket and have the lights dimmed. You'll be sedated just enough to be unaware of the treatment, as if you were sleeping. While you are sedated, we continually monitor your blood pressure, oxygen and pulse and compare it to the base line readings that were taken at your first visit. An assistant will always be present to ensure that you feel safe and comfortable.

A companion is required to accompany you to your appointment. Your companion is welcome to stay while you have your treatment, relax in our waiting area or run errands. We will call your companion with adequate notice to take you home. Most patients return to sleep once they are home and wake up within a few hours with little or no memory of what was accomplished.

For additional information please call our office and we will be happy to mail you an information kit.
