hile a growing number of adults are realizing the benefits of a flattering smile, an increase in the number of dentists offering "smile makeovers" has also grown. However, for those seeking these services, there is more to an appealing smile than changing the appearance of teeth.
Smile enhancement goes far beyond a more flattering appearance. Treatment often instills greater self-confidence and more positive self-image. "With advanced dental technology and materials, a flattering smile with a natural look and feel is possible at any age," states Dr. Joel Singer.
Dr. Singer is one of a small percentage of dentists who have completed extensive advanced aesthetic dentistry training. This training covers proper balance of the shape, size and shade of teeth in relation to facial features. "By adjusting tooth length, width, gum contour, or other aspects, the overall facial appearance improves as well," explains Dr. Singer. "Patients receive the ultimate benefit when this is factored into treatment. The look should be so natural that dental work cannot be detected."

One such patient is Hynda Feit. Hynda was going to New York City for dental care when she heard several neighbors praise the skills of Dr. Singer. Although she’d had previous aesthetic work, Hynda explains, "I hated my teeth for forty years. I just hated my smile." Her concerns included teeth that seemed to protrude, crooked lower teeth, and uneven teeth. Her primary reason for delaying treatment was "forming a relationship with someone I could trust to do it".

Her first appointment with Dr. Singer was just the reassurance she needed. "He knew exactly what I wanted and why. He has an artistic quality about him and understood how to enhance the mouth and facial appearance together."
Prior to her aesthetic changes, Dr. Singer incorporated several stages of treatment to create a healthy mouth. "To enjoy the greatest longevity of aesthetics, it is necessary to eliminate any elements of risk that could cause problems down the road," he says. Hynda’s care would include gum therapy, a dental implant, and porcelain bridges and veneers.
When the aesthetic work was ready to begin, Dr. Singer first prepared Hynda’s teeth to accept the porcelain veneers. He made molds of each tooth and specified an exact shape, size, and shade for the dental laboratory to prepare in porcelain. Before the appointment was concluded, Dr. Singer created a temporary for Hynda to wear. "Even the temporaries looked better!" she exclaims. "Dr. Singer was so considerate about how I would look during treatment. I never felt there was an ‘ugly stage’ during the entire process."
Prior to becoming a patient of Dr. Singer, Hynda admits her comfort with dental visits wasn’t good. However, she is totally different now. "Dr. Singer and his staff are calm, sweet, and welcoming. The whole environment is just conducive to feeling calm. As funny as this sounds, I actually look forward to my dental visits!" she laughs.
Once Hynda’s teeth were prepared and the final porcelain was ready for placement, Dr. Singer completed her new smile in one visit. "Because the temporaries were such an improvement, the change gradually kept getting better. When my smile was complete, I noticed I was getting Debate compliments from others who could tell something was different; they just couldn’t put their finger on it!" Hynda states. It was particularly comforting to realize her smile had such a natural, yet flattering, look. "I would hear ‘I love your lipstick’ or get compliments on my hair, but I knew it was my smile that was causing them to see something different."
While today's advancements in Cosmetic Dentistry make it possible for everyone to enjoy a confident, attractive smile, Hynda knew the best result would come from someone who could combine aesthetic artistry with an individual approach to treatment.
With four grown children, ages 30 to 25, and a ten-year-old daughter, Hynda manages to find time to collect antiques and garden. She was confident in her decision for treatment when she realized "it bothered me and was something I could do something about. If it interferes with how you feel about yourself, then it should be pursued."
Discuss smile enhancement with Dr. Singer at a consultation or at your next visit. Like Hynda, the best smiles are yet to come!
